A Night with Roxi

by LDePhill

It is no secret that the Des Moines music scene is dominated by males, but there are some pretty kick ass females rocking it in our fine city. We lost one of these lovely ladies to Vancouver last year, but lucky for us, Roxi Copland is back in the ‘Greatest City in the World’ tomorrow night.

Roxi has completed her new album which is an acoustic solo compilation that is full of soul, sensuality and emotion. The last time that we caught up with her she told us that she grew up with jazz music and it shows, however, I would describe her more as a lounge singer. I want to be sipping a dry martini and smoking a Virginia Slim while letting her cool voice envelope the evening. There aren’t many younger female singers these days that can pull this jazz and soulful sound off. In a world full of Katy Perry’s and Ke$ha’s, it is so refreshing to hear musical talent like this, especially in Des Moines.

I want to try to compare Roxi’s sound to someone but I just can’t seem to pinpoint anyone. I want to say Joan Baez, but that’s just not right. Or possibly Brandi Carlisle, but again, not quite. Maybe a mashup of the two. I guess that means that Roxi is an original for sure. The last time she was in town she made quite the impression on THays. You can reread his post here. But don’t take our word for it, check her out tomorrow night at the Temple for Performing Arts where Roxi is closing out a long tour to promote her new album, Pretty Lies. This might be the last time to see Roxi Copland for awhile, so get your butts out there. What a fantastic way to spend a Friday night.
