Summer Camp Day One

by LDePhill

Well, I survived the first day of adult Summer Camp. I am no spring chicken, so to say that I survived the first day and feel pretty good is better than I thought. Although, I did have to skip out a bit early tonight (midnight) so that I could fully function for two more days. The weather was very warm and the earth was crazy dry which caused major dust storms, but all in all it was a kick ass first day.

The day started out with Keller Williams. I have not seen Keller live before, but it was pretty fun. Not the vibe I usually crave at a fest, but fun none the less. After just a few songs we headed over to Leftover Salmon. This is the shit I dig. The music was legit and the dancing began. I freaking love Leftover Salmon. Such a good bluegrass sound that you can easily dance to. If you get a chance, check this band out.

We stayed around at the Sunshine stage to check out Weir, Robinson and Greene’s acoustic set. The set started out with a classic Truckin’ and rounded out with Uncle John’s Band and a few other fun tunes mixed in. I am almost ready to kick myself for saying this because I feel like it is sacrilegious, but I just wasn’t fully feeling this set. It was fun and nostalgic but seemed to be lacking in flavor.

We cut out a bit early on the Weir, Robinson, Greene set to check out an Iowa favorite, Cornmeal. Two words: DANCE PARTY! This crazy rock/bluegrass band was the breakout performance of day one for me. The crowd was a bit sparse, but we sure made up for it by kicking up some major dust getting our boogie on. I love this band.

The night rounded out with Wick-it the Instigator, EOTO, Umphrey’s McGee and Lotus (ok, we started to check out right as they began… hey, I’m getting old!).

I’m hitting the hay now so that I can be refreshed and hopefully ready to rage a bit longer tomorrow. Peace, friends.
