A few weeks ago my friend Mark sent out a plea on twitter to help get his cousin a gig while she was in town. He swore she was really talented and was only in town for a week. So through the awesome network of Des Moines people, Mark’s cousin Alexa found herself with four opportunities to play.
Alexa is actually ½ of the Kilgore Sisters out of Missouri. As the name implies, they are a sister duo that grew up surrounded by music through the talents of their parents and starting singing together at a young age. Alexa’s sister Alea was not able to make the trip, so solo gigs were what Alexa was looking for.
The first gig was during Open Mic night at 504 Club, hosted by our friends Josh Davis and Will Locker of Bright*Giant. I was unable to attend that night but received a ton of text messages during Alexa’s performance about how awesome she sounded.
The second gig was the chance to play on NewCast Live. I was able to catch a bit of this performance and the first thing I noticed was this adorable girl able to hold her own with the snarky (and highly entertaining) hosts. If you have seen this show you know what I mean. If you haven’t had a chance to catch one yet, do it. Once Alexa started to play, I was unbelievably impressed.
I did get the chance to check out Alexa’s third gig of the week at Mars Cafe. I was instantly drawn to her girly charm partnered with her bold attitude. She has a folk music sound with a soft and smooth voice. Alexa played an assortment of covers including Elvis, Norah Jones and even the Eagles, but each song had a unique element that she brought to the sound. There were a few original songs throughout the night that were well crafted and easy listening. I am anxious to hear more original songs performed with her sister as well during future performances in the area.
The week was rounded out with a gig at Blue Moon on Friday. I’m certainly stoked that Alexa had so many great opportunities to play in Des Moines last week, as she truly is a very talented musician. The Kilgore Sisters plan to make several trips back to our fine city this summer so if you didn’t get a chance to check Alexa out while she was here, keep an eye out this summer. You absolutely don’t want to miss out again. We will keep you posted as we find out more on additional dates for the Kilgore Sisters.
Peace~
